Temple of the Dog Biography
Temple of the Dog formed in Seattle in 1990 as a tribute to Andrew Wood, a close friend of Chris Cornell, who died from a drug overdose. Joining Chris Cornell were Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament, Mike McCready, Matt Cameron, and Eddie Vedder.
Temple of the Dog began rehearsing the tracks “Reach Down” and “Say Hello 2 Heaven,” which were written by Cornell, as well as re-working other material written by various band members. The band recorded their debut self-titled album in only two weeks.
Released on April 16, 1991, Temple of the Dog was released through A&M Records and sold 70,000 copies in the United States shortly after its release. The next year, both Soundgarden and Pearl Jam had made names for themselves, which prompted A&M Records to re-release Temple of the Dog. The album became one of the best-selling albums of 1992.
